Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of three Danish brothers who served in WWI, Private Alexander Johansen (Service No:7985) enlisted in the AIF on 24 September 1917, and was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion on 23 November 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Southampton on board SS Canberra. Private Johansen was WiA in France on 16 August 1918 - severe shell wounds to his back, thigh and leg - and was evacuated to hospital in England. Embarking from England for Fremantle on 25 January 1919 on board HT Ceramic, Private Johansen was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 31 March 1919.

Alexander was born in Denmark in 1891, fourth of eleven children of Karl Emil Johannesen (b1862 in Denmark) and Sophie Svensdotter (b1865 in Sweden). Karl and Sophie married 1885 in Arhus, Denmark, and lived in Randers where they raised their family and Karl was Stationmaster at Randers Station. Eldest son John (Johannes) immigrated in 1906, and died in Coolgardie in 1910.

Alexander and his younger brother Svendt (both General Labourers) immigrated together in 1910,  arriving in Fremantle on board the Zeiten (younger brother Peter followed in 1913 - he was KiA in 1917 in France). Alexander was a Labourer in Perth when he enlisted in the AIF, and following his Discharge settled in Pemberton, where he worked at the State Saw Mills with his brother Svendt as a Timber Worker/Mill Hand. Alexander retired to Perth, where he died in 1976.
