Marched into 5th Training Battalion at Rollestone, Wiltshire, England, on 4 November 1916. To be acting Sergeant on 15 November 1916. Proceeded overseas to France per Princess Henrietta, on 13 December 1916, and marched in at Etaples, France, on 14 December 1916. To be Acting Corporal on 16 December 1916. Joined 18th Battalion, France on 23 January 1917 and reverts to Private on 25 January 1917. To 9th General Hospital, Rouen, France, on 16 February 1917. Then on 17 February to 6th Australian General Hospital, Rouen, France, with defective vision. Departed Le Havre on HS Panama, on 25 February 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England, on 26 February 1917. Transferred on 7 April 1917 to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, England. Discharged to furlough on 21 June 1917. Back from furlough at Weymouth, England on 8 July 1917. Returned to Australia on 21 July 1917.

Fate:   Returned to Australia per HMAT A14 Euripides, 21 July 1917. He married Fanny Emma Marie Humphris, 14 November 1923, St Philip's Church of England, York Street, Sydney, NSW.
