Military Medal Winner
Norman was recommended for the Military Medal on the morning of the 12th. of May 1917.
He was at Bullecourt. He was the only surviving member of a Lewis Gun team undergoing heavy shelling and refused to leave his post until 2 pm. when he was struck in the face by a shell fragment.

"HATTY.— On the 8th of May, at the Repatriation Hospital, Caulfleld, Norman Robert William, the dearly loved husband of Mercia, and loving father of Norma and Edward, aged 41 years.
After a long suffering, sweet rest.
HATTY.— On the 8th May, passed peacefully away, at Repatriation G.H., Caulfield, Norman R., beloved son late Mr. and Mrs. Hatty, dear brother of Margaret (Mrs. W. F. Livingston, South-street. Ascot Vale), Samuel (deceased), Leslie T. (Ascot Vale), all late A.I.F. Rest In peace." - from the Melbourne Age 09 May 1936 (nla.gov.au)
