Son of William John Cleaver and Emily Cleaver of Beaufort Street, Perth WA.

Sentenced to 10 years penal servitude on 03 Oct 1918 having deserted (AWL) on 08 Aug 1918 during the battle of Amiens until 22 Sep 1918. After two weeks the 10 year sentence was suspended and Bertie was released to rejoin his Battalion after serving a total of 30 days.
