Biography contributed by John Oakes

Henry CHADWICK, (Service Number 1179) was born on 11th October 1891 at Brunswick, Victoria. He had a brief career with the NSW Government Railways and Tramways. He was a tram conductor in Sydney from April 1914. He was released to join the Expeditionary Forces on 17th August 1914.

He was killed in action at the Dardanelles on 19th May 1915. He was buried in Shrapnel Valley by the Rev. McKenzie on the day of his death.

Post-war reconstruction of the battlefields and gravesites did enable the precise location of some graves. Many exhumations were made to concentrate cemeteries into more defined and manageable areas. Henry Chadwick’s remains were identified and they do now rest under the standard headstone which is his memorial at Anzac.
