Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

James Euphrates Cunningham was born aboard a ship in the Red Sea during 1878. His parents seem to have lived in India for some time. He enlisted during July 1915, just after he had married to Lillian May. He was living in Carlton Victoria at the time. He arrived in Egypt late in 1915 and qualified for the 1914-15 Star. James was killed about 6 days after the Fromelles battle, when the 29th Battalion was still occupying parts of the front line near Fromelles. Lillian completed his roll of honour circular and stated that his home town was Walhalla in Gippsland. It seems she remarried before the end of the war.

James was one of four brothers who enlisted, and only 5995 Alfred John Cunningham 39th Battalion survived. Their parents had died before the war.

One brother, 3459 Pte. Alexander Valentine Cunningham 5th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres 3 weeks later on 18 August 1916.

Another brother, 1521 Pte. Edward William Cunningham 24th Battalion AIF died of wounds in the last battle for the AIF at Montbrehain on 6 October 1918.
