Wenzel Harold RAYMONT (Service Number 1569) was born at Hay about June 1892. He worked as a labourer on the Railways.
Raymont enlisted at Warwick Farm on 9th September 1915. He was married to Alice May Raymont and she was nominated as his next of kin.
He was initially allotted to the 7th Light Horse. he embarked SS ‘Hawkes Bay’ at Sydney on 23rd November 1915. He reached Egypt by late December and was taken on the strength of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Maadi on 28th December.
In January 1916 he was admitted to hospital with mumps and on his return to duty was transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade and posted to the 37th Battery.
He was sick again in April and on his return to duty was transferred to the 4th Divisional Artillery Column. By this time the Australian Divisions were leaving Egypt for France, so Raymont passed through Alexandria on 6th June 1916 and Marseilles on 13th June. His rank was changed to Driver.
In December he was admitted to the 5th Field Ambulance with haemorrhoids and invalided to England aboard ‘Dover Castle’ through Le Havre. He was admitted to No. 8 General Hospital, and then the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital. From 26th January to 10th February 1917 he had furlough in England before returning to France in March 1917. He spent the next year transporting ammunition and supplies to the front. On 6th April 1918 was taken on the strength to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade.
He was wounded in action on 10th October 1918 with multiple shrapnel injuries and transferred to the 48th Casualty Clearing Station where he died of his wounds on 12th October.
Pte R.G. Friend stated:
‘I saw Raymont going into action, he was wounded by shell in both legs arms and side at Busigney in October 1918. He was removed to the dressing station. He was on the ration cart – I saw his cart and donkey overturned. Know nothing of his burial.’
He was buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, 6¾ miles ENE of Péronne.
