When Arthur Leslie Jones was born on 23 March 1888, in Gladstone, South Australia, Australia,  his father, William Arthur Jones, was 30 and his mother, Margaret Ann McCracken, was 19. He married Gladys Amelia Miller on 12 September 1917, in Yongala, South Australia, Australia. He died on 28 August 1947, in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, at the age of 59, and was buried in Payneham Cemetery, Payneham, South Australia, Australia.

Arthur Jones was a gardener and lived in Houghton, which is 21.4 km northeast of Adelaide CBD. On the 16th of July 1915, Arthur enlisted and was sent to the 10th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement. John’s embarked on HMAT A70 Ballarat. Arthur was seriously wounded during operations at Pope's Hill, Gallipoli in May 1915. Arthur was evacuated from the Peninsula with a gunshot wound to his head and left eye and returned to Australia in July 1915. Arthur arrived back in Australia 5 April 1919.
