GOWLING.— On the 1st August, at Bedford Park, Eric Stewart, loved son of A. E. Cowling, Jamieson street, Alberton, late 50th Battalion. A soldier of Christ. '

Eric Stewart Gowling (male) was born in Alberton, South Australia, on the 27th of November, 1897. His parents were Alfred Edwards and Adelaide Gowling. Eric Stewart grew up in Alberton, on Jamieson Street, and went to Alberton Public School. Before enlisting in the war, Eric worked as a Clerk and was also a part of the Naval Cadets at Largs Bay, for 3 years. When Eric was 15, he joined the Junior Rifle Team as part of his Cadets. When he was 18, he enlisted into WW1 on the 26th of July 1915. Eric Stewart served in the 10th Infantry Battalion but was later transferred to the 50th Battalion and his regimental number was 3328.
Eric weighed 73kg, he was 5 feet and 8 ¼ inches, he had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and fair hair colour and he identified as a Methodist. He enlisted in the AIF at Keswick, South Australia on 14th July 1915.
Eric Stewart boarded the HMAT A24 Benalla which embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on the 27th of October, 1915 as part of the 10th infantry battalion and the 9th to 12th reinforcements for that battalion. The length of his journey was 2 months and the battalion landed in Egypt in December.
Eric transferred into the 50th battalion on the 29th of February, 1916 as part of the doubling of the AIf after Gallipoli.
Eric was sent off to France 5th June 1916 arriving at Marseilles to fight on the Western Front. This is where he got wounded in action, twice. One of which was on 15th August 1916 with Shell Shock and an injury to his left foot. Eric was gassed in October 1917 and after initial treatment in France was admitted to Reading War Hospital, England.
Eric Stewart made it back to Australia arriving 22nd May 1918. He was discharged from the AIF 12th August 1918. He sadly died 6 years later on the 1st of August 1924 at age 26.
