Son of Emily (Amelia) Hook of 'Chichester', Park Road, Marrickville, NSW. Brother of Thomas Oswald Smith who returned to Australia on 13 November 1919 having served with the 17th Battalion

Commenced return to Australia on 22 November 1919 aboard HT Aenaes disembarking on 12 January 1920 and discharged the same day

No eligible for medals due to being and illegal absentee from February 1918 until April 1919
