48 years ago today, on the 25th May 1976, Private George Alfred Kahl, 4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-3655), assistant publisher (Newcastle Morning Herald, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from 58 off Bolton Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 14 Pokolbin Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 76. CATHOLIC 2-45. 138.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales about 1899 to John William Jnr, referred to as Jack, died 27.8.1919, age?, from 58 off Bolton Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, buried at ANGLICAN 1-72, 36, unmarked grave, and Mary Kahl, died 27.2.1953, Burwood, N.S.W., age 82, of 70 Campbell Street, Balmain, N.S.W.; husband of Annie May Kahl nee Fallins (married 1920, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., died 23.3.1948, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 46, sleeping here, name not listed on the Sandgate Cemetery database or Find a Grave website), George enlisted on the 30th March 1917 with the 45th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A74 Marathon on the 10th May 1917. 

Admitted to hospital 5.1.1918 (trench fever), 11.1.1918 (pyrexia, nephritis, albuminuria).

Embarked for England 18.1.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 18.7.1919.

George arrived home on the 7th September 1919, being discharged on the 8th October 1919.

Mr. Kahl’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle East Public School Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Plot III Row H Grave 32, memorialised at parent's gravesite - CATHOLIC 1-M Com. 32.
