His brother 662 Pte Thomas Mackrell, 24th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres 29 July 1916.

Other brothers Reuben Mackrell served with the South African Forces and Ewan Mackrell served with the 4th Field Company Engineers AIF and returned to Australia in 1919.
