Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Ernest was the fifth of eight children of William Henry Lewis (born 1845 in London, England) and Louisa Emily Selway (born 1855 in London, England). Henry (a Railway Carman) and Louisa (a General Servant) married in 1882 in London.

A Milk Carrier in London, Ernest arrived in Sydney, NSW in 1913 on board the Benalla, and moved to Ipswich, QLD that year, finding work as a Boilermaker's Assistant. In 1914 he married Dora Elizabeth Barnes (born 1896 in Northumberland, QLD). Dora was a Domestic Servant when she immigrated to Brisbane, QLD in 1912 on board the Owestry Grange. Ernest and Dora were living in Ipswich, where Ernest was a Boilermaker when he enlisted in the AIF in May 1916. Ernest served as a Private (Service No:2345) with 42nd Infantry Battalion and 15th Infantry Battalion, and was WiA in France on two occasions. He was Discharged in January 1920.

Returning to Ipswich, QLD, Ernest worked as a Driller until he and Dora retired to Murwillumbah in NSW in 1949. Following Dora's death in 1961, Ernest moved to Southport in QLD where he died in 1973.
