Charlie Marvell, was with a working party on Messines Ridge when he was killed instantly by a “whizz bang” shell. His mates said they collected the remains in a blanket and took them down in a stretcher to Hyde Park Corner and buried him. Today Charlie Marvell’s headstone is in the Strand Military Cemetery at Ploegsteert. He was 19 years of age.
He had enlisted with his brother William Marvell in the 40th Tasmanian Battalion. William was killed in action 2 weeks beforehand, on 7 June 1917 but was still listed as missing in action at the time of Charlie's death.
