Biography contributed by Steve Larkins

From Gary Mitchell

A Forgotten Digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
55 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 5th January 1965, Private Horace John Hitchins, 30th Battalion, assistant surveyor of Alderley Lane, Stroud, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. CATHOLIC 3-88. 37.

Born at Macksville, New South Wales on the 26th November 1889 (as HITCHENS) to Edward and Rachel Hitchins, Horace enlisted September 1915 West Maitland, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 14.4.1916 (mumps), Horace returned home July 1919.

His name has been inscribed on the Stroud War Memorial and the Stroud Cenotaph.

Mr Hitchins had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite January 2019, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
