Thomas left Adelaide on board HMAT A30 Borda on 23 June 1917, disembarking at Plymouth, England on 25 August. He went from Southampton to France with the 43rd Battalion on 18 December where he served for the duration of the war. During March and April of 1918 Thomas suffered recurring tonsillitis and was hospitalised on several occasions. From 17 March 1919 he was attached to the Australian Graves Detachment until returning to Australia on the Port Denison on 25 September. Thomas disembarked on 13 November and was discharged on 19 December.
After World War One he worked as a Miner. At the age of 41, Thomas enlisted in the 2nd A.I.F. in Alice Springs on 23 October 1939. Rejoining the 43rd Battalion, Thomas was appointed Corporal on 27 March 1940 and served with the Darwin Fortress Company. On 30 September 1941 he was admitted to 119 General Hospital with pterygium. Thomas was promoted to the rank of Acting Sergeant on 12 February 1942. He was discharged on 8 November 1943.
