Son of Charles Upton and Annie Elizabeth Upton of Station House, Molong, NSW. Brother of Kenneth Charles Upton who returned to Australia on 22 April 1919 having served with the 18th Battalion.

23 February 1915 - enlisted at Liverpool, NSW, with the 12 Light Horse Regiment and with the rank of Private. 

29 August 1915 - transferred to the 7th Light Horse Regiment.

29 March 1916 - taken on strength with Australian Record Section 

6 April 1916 - promoted to Orderly Room Sergeant

21 April 1916 - promoted to Staff Sergeant

4 December 1917 -  wounded in action. Wound to the head 

15 June 1918 -  promoted to 1ns Lieutenant

30 August 1918 - transferred to the 12th Light Horse Regiment

16 September 1918 - promoted to Lieutenant

26 June 1919 - returned to Australia about HT Devanka

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

25 August 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District

During 1923c Gregroy married Freda L. Robertson in Sydney, NSW.
