Les (Leslie St Clair Ward) was the eldest of six children of Albert Edward Ward (b1871 in Sydney, NSW) and Henrietta Emma Busse (aka Emma; b1872 in Buenos Aeries, Argentina). Emma arrived with her father in Melbourne, Victoria in May 1882 on board the Amalfi. Albert (a Line Repairer) and Emma married in Perth WA in 1901. They settled in Kelmscott WA where Albert was a Line Repairer (WAGR), later moving to Perth.

Les was a Teamster working in Kelmscott, WA in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF - giving his birth date as 1898 (in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army he gave his birthdate as 1900). Les was a Trooper (Service No:3377) with 10th Light Horse Regiment in Suez. He was in Isolation Camp at Moascar before transferring to the Mounted Division's Training Depot. Les was then seriously ill with Malaria and hospitalised in Beirut. He was a Driver attached to 8th Sanitary Section when he was Discharged inAugust 1919.

Returning to Perth, Les married Sophia (Sis) Louisa May Otway (b1898 in Beverley WA) in 1919 in Perth, WA. Les worked as a Labourer in Perth until 1930 when he and Sis divorced. Les then travelled around the country looking for work and by 1932 was in Bulli, New South Wales. He was in Murrurundi NSW when enlisted in the Army in 1940 (Private; Service No:NX6031) and was atatched to 2/4 Pioneers Battalion when he was Discharged in May 1942. Les' eldest son - Frederick Ernest Charles Ward (RAN, Sevice No:24029) was lost at sea in November 1941 when the HMAS Sydney III was sunk by the German cruiser Cormoran. Youngest son Keith St Clair Ward also served in the RAN (Service No:23367).

Les returned to Perth WA and worked as a Storemen. He died in 1965.
