The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 20th name inscribed is Private Hugh McKinnon.

On the 4th January 1964, Private Hugh McKinnon, 13th Battalion (Reg No-1209), labourer from Newtown, Minmi, New South Wales, died age 74 years 6 months, ashes scattered Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown.

Born at Greta, New South Wales on the 21st June 1889 to Hugh, died 10.7.1920, Minmi, N.S.W., age 70, buried at Minmi Cemetery, Left Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 022, and Eliza McKinnon, died tragically, 29.8.1910, Minmi, age 42, mother of 5, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, Left Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 022.

Hugh enlisted on the 29th October 1914, age 25 years 4 months, at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 22nd December 1914.
An Original Anzac.

Wounded in action at Gallipoli 2.5.1915.

Admitted to hospital 9.5.1915 (wound of left foot).

1915 from Heliopolis, Egypt, states he is in hospital with a wound in the foot, and about landing at the Dardanelles.

Commenced return to Australia 4.8.1915.

Hugh arrived home on the 2nd September 1915, not being discharged until the 21st July 1920, in consequence of being an illegal absentee from the 2nd October 1915.

Mr. McKinnon’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.

Older brother William McKINNON, born 15.6.1887, Greta, New South Wales, married miner from Whitburn Street, Greta, New South Wales, enlisted 20.9.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., 31st Battalion, Reg No-2154, age 28 years 3 months, unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 18th February 1916, wounded in action - 19.7.1916 (GSW left forearm, severe, Battle of Fromelles), admitted to hospital 13.7.1917 (tachycardia & trench fever), RTA 7.3.1918, discharged medically unfit 6.4.1918, died 21.5.1966, Greta, N.S.W., age 78 years 11 months, name inscribed on the Greta Soldiers' Obelisk as Mackinnon, ashes interred Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown, not officially commemorated.
