Frederick left Adelaide on board HMAT Warillda on 10 February 1916 bound for Egypt where he served throughout the war. On 1 June he sustained a slight head wound which was treated at hospital in Romani, enabling him to rejoin his unit on 28 June. Frederick’s parents were advised of the incident on 14 June by Base Records in Melbourne. He was hospitalised on 3 occasions throughout the period of May to September 1917 due to haemorrhoids and in October was treated for pyrexia. Frederick returned to Australia from Egypt on the Orari and whilst in transit had to be treated for malaria in June 1919. He was discharged on 19 August.
