A brief history

Herbert Lindsay Raggatt was the son of J. J. and Maria Raggatt of Strathalbyn. He was one of 9 children and known as Lindsay to his family. Lance Corporal Raggatt was wounded in the shoulder and chest on 29 Sep 1917 (Polygon Wood) and evacuated the the 10th Stationary Hospital, Saint Omer and then on to England where he was reported dangerously ill.

He recovered after spending time in hospital in Cambridge and returned via Egypt to Australia.

TROVE reports from the Strathalbyn Newspaper report his return. He married Hilda Myrtle Rumsby and worked as Stock and Station Agent for Elder Smith & Goldsborough Mort, living in Morgan and Port Lincoln. The family settled in Westbourne Park in the 1930's.

During the Second World War he served as a member of the militia.

His parents were JJ Raggatt and Maria Westley, he was one of 6 children, Florence, Herbert, John, Ivy, Madge and Lance. 
After being wounded he was first sent to a Hospital in St Omer and then to England to recover near Oxford. 
on his return to Adelaide he worked as a Station and Stock Agent for Elders Smith and Goldsborough Mort, working in Morgan and Port Lincoln. He and Hilda Myrtle Rumsby had 2 daughters, Shirley born in 1922 and Pamela born in 1931. The family settled in Westbourne Park, where he lived until shortly before his death.
