Son of M. O'Mara of Piper Street, Portland, NSW. On page 52 of the Attestation paper it states the name had been changed from O'Mara to Mara but that the correct name was actually O'Mara.

In 1915 James had enlisted as re-enforcements for the 4th Battalion but did not embark due to measles. At the time of enlistment he was underage.

Commenced return to Australia on 11 May 1919 aboard HT Borda disembarking on 28 June 1919
