Along with his unit Norman left Melbourne on board HMAT A2 Geelong on 17
September 1914, undertaking further training in Egypt prior to being sent to
Gallipoli in early 1915. He sustained a slight shrapnel wound to the right thigh
at Gallipoli on 12 July. Norman was hospitalised in London on 8 August,
returned to duty in Egypt on 22 November and rejoined his unit on 3
December after treatment at hospital in Mudros.
Sent to fight in France in 1916, he was shot in the thigh, chest and arm on 24
July. Norman’s next-of-kin was advised of his wounding on 13 August. He
served in Belguim for most of 1917 and returned to France with his unit in
early 1918. It was here that he was wounded for a third time when gassed on
9 May. Norman was evacuated to England where he received treatment at
Croydon War Hospital. Shortly after recovering he married Barbara Boswall at
Edinburgh on 28 December 1918. Norman returned to Australia on the
Bremen on 4 June 1919 and was discharged on 6 August.
