Died on this date – 3rd January…… Percival Reginald Whelan was born at Essendon, Victoria in 1876.

He married Margaret Ada Fuller in 1906 in Victoria.

Percival Reginald Whelan enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 14th August, 1916 as a 40 year old, married, Postal Employee (according to information supplied for the Roll of Honour he was a Telephone Linesman).

On 13th December, 1916 Private Percival Reginald Whelan was promoted to Lance Corporal.

Private (rank as per Embarkation Roll) Percival Reginald Whelan, Service number 4638, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Medic (A7) on 16th December, 1916 with the 8th Infantry Brigade, 29th Infantry Battalion, 12th Reinforcements.

He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 29th December, 1916 with Pneumonia.

Lance Corporal Percival Reginald Whelan died at 5 am on 3rd January, 1917 at Sea on board HMAT Medic (A7) from Pneumonia.

He was buried at Sea from HMAT Medic (A7) on 3rd January, 1917. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
