74 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 7th May 1949, Private William John Skehan, referred to as Jack, 36th Battalion (Reg No-1908), labourer (Glebe Colliery, N.S.W.), from 48 Laman Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and Mackie Avenue, New Lambton, N.S.W., father of six, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. CATHOLIC 2-61. 144.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 8th April 1892 to Patrick J and Anastasia (Annie S?) Skehan; husband of Bernadette Skehan nee Shanahan (married as Jack Skehan, 1918, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 7.7.1944, age 48, sleeping here), Jack enlisted on the 26th April 1916 (as Jack Skehan) at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 4th September 1916.

Wounded in action - 20.7.1917 (GSW forearm, face, Messines), 12.10.1917 (SW left arm, fractured, severe, 1st Battle of Passchendaele).

Invalided to England 27.7.1917 & 24.10.1917.

Amputation left arm 18.11.1917.

Jack was invalided home on the 13th February 1918, being discharged medically unfit (shell wound left arm, amputation) on the 10th August 1918.

Mr. Skehan’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll.
I have placed poppies at Jack’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 5.5.1949.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, 20.12.1949.
