Jim Anderson was born in New Zealand in 1877. Later on in his life, he and his family moved to Perth, Australia. His mother, Edith Sarah Anderson was his next of kin due to his father being deceased. He had never served for war before his enlistment.

Jim Anderson successfully enlisted on the 31st of March, 1916. He enlisted in the city of Perth, Western Australia. At the time of enlistment Jim Anderson was 39 years and 5 months old. 

On the 15th of Novemeber, 1916 he embarked per Princess Clementine and proceeded overseas France. Before Jim disembarked he was placed into the 51st Batallion, however on the 24th of February 1917 he was placed into the 32nd Batallion. During his service Jim Anderson's trade of calling was stud hand. On the 5th of March, 1917 Jim Anderson was killed in action. His location of burial is not known.
