62 years ago today, on the 9th February 1962, Private Norman James Winn, 5th Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-43), merchant draper from "Winncourt", Waratah, New South Wales, was laid to rest or ashes interred at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) C NW. 3.

Norman had died on the 31st March 1961 at Coffs Harbour, N.S.W.

Born at Mayfield, New South Wales on the 24th January 1896 to Isaac, died 1.11.1934, Toronto, N.S.W., age 82, buried at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) A NE. 21, and Catherine Jane Winn nee Rutledge, died 16.10.1951, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 89, sleeping at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) A NE. 21; husband of Florence A K Winn nee Charleston (married 1925, Newcastle, N.S.W., died?), Norm enlisted on the 10th July 1915 with the 30th Battalion Machine Gun Section at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 25.9.1916 (acute bronchitis).

Granted special leave to the Imperial College of England from 27.6.1917 to 2.7.1917.

Granted leave to England and France from 12.2.1919 to 11.3.1919 and 11.5.1919 to 11.8.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 7.9.1919.

Norm arrived home on the 24th October 1919, being discharged on the 23rd December 1919.

Mr. Winn’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Mayfield Public School Honour Roll, Mayfield Methodist Church Roll of Honour, W. Winn & Co. Ltd. Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Norm’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother Frank Coupland Winn (M.I.D., born 12.2.1891, Mayfield, New South Wales, merchant draper from "Winncourt", Waratah, New South Wales, enlisted 10.7.1915, 30th Battalion, Machine Gun Section, Reg No-42, RTA 24.10.1919, Lieutenant, 8th Australian Machine Gun Company, died 10.11.1970, Bowral, N.S.W., age 79, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.

Older brother Keith Robert Winn (born 26.4.1894, Mayfield, New South Wales, farmer from "Winncourt", Waratah, New South Wales, enlisted 7.9.1915, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade, Reg No-10105, RTA 10.8.1919, Lieutenant, died?, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.
