Son of John James O'Neil and Alice Emma O'Neil nee Humber of Grove Street, Albion, QLD.

Brother of Eric Sylvester O'Neil who returned to Australia on 22 July 1917 having served with the 9th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 3 January 1919 aboard HT Orontes disembarking on 1 February 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

On 9 June 1920 John married Lillian Street in QLD.
