71 years ago today, on the 7th July 1953, Private Bertie Avery, 13th Battalion (Reg No-1707), police constable (N.S.W. Mounted Police), from Bourke Street, Waterloo, New South Wales (Police Station) and Parramatta, N.S.W. and 65 Howe Street, Lambton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CONGREGATIONAL-5CNE. 56.
Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 19th January 1893 to Samuel, died 11.6.1911, Lambton, N.S.W., age 47, buried at CONGREGATIONAL-4CNE. 28, from 65 Howe Street, Lambton, New South Wales, and Martha Avery nee Blakeway, remarried to William Ridley, 1914, Lambton, N.S.W., died 16.10.1940, Mater Hospital, Waratah, N.S.W., age 74, sleeping at CONGREGATIONAL-4CNE. 28, from 65 & 12 Howe Street, Lambton, New South Wales; husband of Thelma Gertrude Avery nee Hodges, married 1917, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 15.5.1987, Sydney, N.S.W., age 92, 34 years a widow, sleeping here, from 64 Grand Avenue, Weastmead, N.S.W. (1967), Bert enlisted on the 18th January 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 17th March 1915.
Admitted to hospital 13.8.1915 (GSW right hand), 1.9.1915 (dysentery).
Wounded in action - 9.8.1915 (GSW right hand).
Commenced return to Australia 21.1.1916 (Escort Duties).
Bert arrived home on the 29th February 1916, being discharged on the 16th May 1916.
Mr. Avery’s name has been inscribed on the Maitland And District Roll of Honor, Lambton Park Citizens' Memorial Gates, Lambton and New Lambton Municipal Roll of Honor, Lambton Hand of Freedom Lodge, U.A.O. Druids, Roll of Honour and Board, Roll of Honour NSW Police Force 1914 - 1919, Surry Hills NSW Police Force Roll of Honour WW1 and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Bert’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
