John McLaren Scott was born in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland in 1891.  When he enlisted at Blackboy Hill, Perth on the 17.5.1915 he was 24 years 9 months old, a farm hand in Bruce Rock and Church of England. Next of kin was Christian Scott, his widowed mother of Fremantle. John was described as being 5 feet 7¾ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 36 – 39 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair.  Allocated the rank of Private and Service Number 1629, he embarked on the 9.4.15 from Fremantle and sailed to Gallipoli on the 4.9.15 per HT Ivernia. He served with the 28th Infantry Battalion. On the 10.1.16 he disembarked from HMT Ansonia, ex Mudros and joined the Camel Corps. On the 21.4.1917 in Palestine, he received shrapnel wounds to his arms and legs and a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was buried in Deir El Balah War Cemetery, Palestine/Israel. Grave #95. This cemetery was damaged during the 2024-2025 conflict in the region.
