Son of Michael Simmons and Alice (nee Ryan) Simmons; husband of Alma Gladys (nee Fowecracker) Simmons; brother of William Lawrence Joseph Simmons who was killed in action on 29 September 1918 in France while serving with the 32nd Battalion.

John has previously tried to enlist when he was aged 15 years. At the time of enlistment John was residing with his mother at 105 Gilbert Street, Adelaide
