Cornelius was the second of three children of Richard Mahoney (born 1865 in County Cork, Ireland) and Sarah Hannah Hughes (born 1872 in Brisbane, QLD). Richard (a Seaman) married Sarah in 1896 in Brisbane, QLD, They settled in Brisbane where they raised their family.

In 1916 Cornelius was a Wardman in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:2846) with 42nd Infantry Battalion and AASC Details. He was Discharged in December 1918. Brother William Richard (Private, Service No:3404) also served in WWI. Both Cornelius (Private, Service No:Q187308) and William (Warrant Officer Class II, Service No:Q187351) served in the CMF in WWII, and nephew (William's son) Private Vincent George (Service No:QX19876) was a PoW and died in 1943 at Kanchanaburi in Thailand.

Cornelius married three times - in 1919 to Olive Mary Loader (born 1897 in Dorset, England); in 1925 (following Olive's death in 1924) Cornelius married Widow Florence Elizabeth McNamara (nee Newland, born 1887 in Brisbane, QLD), and when Florence died in 1928, Cornelius married Dorothy Gwendoline Ward (born 1893 in Birmingham, Warwickshire) in 1931. In 1929/1930 Cornelius, a Labourer,  was a Widower with seven children - five of whom were step - children (Trove, NAA).

Cornelius lived in Brisbane, where he worked as a Labourer until he relocated to Cribb Island in 1958, where he died in 1960.
