"Escaped Prisoner of War (POW)... is 4249 Private Alex (Alec) Waterhouse, 12th Battalion from Wickepin, Western Australia... awarded the Military Medal by King George V for gallant conduct and determination in escaping from Germany. Pte Waterhouse enlisted on 11 October 1915 and embarked for overseas on 29 January 1916 aboard HMAT Runic. He was captured at Pozieres, France, on 22 August 1916 and held as a POW in Germany before escaping to Holland in October 1917. Pte Waterhouse wrote to his mother as follows: "I have arrived safely in Holland Oct. 8th. Escaped from Germany, expect me home, any time love Alex" Pte Waterhouse arrived in England on 4 November 1917 and arrived back in Australia on 6 June 1918..." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
