The Bendigo Independent Newspaper reported on June 1st ,1918 that
WOUNDED.
PTE. J. M. KAVANAGH.
Official news has reached his father, who resides at 2 Breen St, Quarry Hill, that Pte. Jim M. Kavanagh has been admitted to the Alexandra Hospital. Casham, England, suffering from gunshot wound in the
back. Pte. Kavanagh, prior to enlistment. was employed on the staff of Messrs. H. M. Leggo and Co.
The Australian War memorial website reports Pte Kavanagh embarked with the 9th Reinforcements, 59th Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917. Later wounded in action he was evacuated to England. Following his recovery he rejoined his battalion and returned to Australia on 2 August 1919.
