Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Son of Eva and the late John Short. His father passed away shortly before he enlisted. Stanley was born at Prospect, South Australia, and also attended Nailsworth Public School. He married to Kathleen in 1913 and was working for the Midland Junction Railways in Western Australia when he enlisted. He was also the father to two small children.
On his roll of honour form, filled out by his mother, Eva, she stated that Stanley was first cousin to Brigadier R.L. Leane and his brothers, all from Prospect, South Australia.
The 51st Battalion saw their first major battle at Pozieres and Mouquet Farm in August and September 1916. Short was promoted to Corporal only five days before he was reported missing on 3 September 1916. At first it was thought he may have been taken a POW. It wasn’t until April 1917 that Short was confirmed as being killed in action. Short’s body was located in 1923, along with his damaged identity disc and the War Graves Commission reinterred his remains at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery.
Stanley Short’s wife remarried and it seems that Base Records was unable to get in touch with her regarding the discovery of her husband’s remains and the disposal of the identity disc. From Short’s service file it seems that his two children were in care in an orphanage.
