John McKay was born in NZ. He served in the 6th NZ Rifles in South Africa for 18 months during the Boer War.
He enlisted on September 14, 1914, and was posted to the 6th LH Regiment. At the time, he was living at Blandford in the Upper Hunter Valley, NSW.
He was promoted to CPL on December 20, 1914.
While on Gallipoli, he was injured when hit in the foot with a pickaxe, most likely while digging trenches or shelters. He was evacuated with a septic infection and was eventually sent home and medically discharged on April 4, 1916.
After the war he moved to Karrakatta in WA. He died in 1946.
The family doesn't know too much more about him at the moment but is continuing with their research.
