Alexander Unwin Hillyar arrived on Gallipoli on 6 August 1915, age 19, with the 1st Battalion and was wounded at Lone Pine three days later. He was evacuated to Mudros with a bomb wound to the thigh and rejoined his Battalion at Anzac during late October 1915. After the evacuation he was transferred to the 53rd Battalion and promoted to Corporal.
He was seen to have been killed by a shellfire by several men on the 19 July 1916, as he was a corporal and leading a section of men. His remains were never found.
His older brother 7490 Pte. Harold Unwin Hillyar 34th Battalion AIF, was killed in action 30 March 1918, aged 25.
Their parents were Henry Unwin and Lydia Jane (Lily) Unwin of Neutral Bay, Sydney, NSW.
