His brother, Lieutenant James Norbet Griffin M.C. also served with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment.
Daniel was twice wounded with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, firstly at Romani in August 1916. He was recommended for a Military Medal for rescuing a wounded man under heavy rifle and machine gun fire but never received an award. He was again badly wounded during April 1917 and evacuated to Australia soon after.
