From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served bravely during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.
57 years ago today, on the 3rd February 1964, Lieutenant James Milton Mackie (M.M.), 57th Battalion (Reg No-1298), warehouseman from Addison Road, New Lambton, New South Wales and 20 Glyndon Avenue, Brighton, Victoria, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 74. ANGLICAN 1-27. 134.
Born at Rockdale, New South Wales on the 23rd January 1890 to James and Mary Kendrick Mackie of Lily Street, Waratah, New South Wales; husband of Ella Muriel Mackie nee Wilson (married 1909, Waterloo, N.S.W., died?, and Dorothea Harriet Mackie, married?, died?), James enlisted November 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.
James was awarded the Military Medal on the 3rd September 1917.
Service record indicates no wounds or illness, and returned home July 1919, being discharged on the 23rd August 1919.
Mr Mackie’s name has been inscribed on the Messrs. J. Mackie and Company Honour Roll (unveiled on the 2nd August 1918, 14 names inscribed, whereabouts unknown), Lambton and New Lambton Roll of Honor, New Lambton War Memorial Gates and the Waratah-St Philip's Anglican Church Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour his service during The Great War.
James also served 2nd A.I.F. (VX38672).
Younger brother Alexander (5th Australian Pioneer Battalion, Reg No-1347, born 1895, died 1962) also resting here.
Lest We Forget.
