59 years ago today, on the 10th December 1962, Private Charles Leonard Robertshaw, 36th Battalion (Reg No-2378), carpenter from 64 Bolton Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Chapman's Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., father of two (Charles & Gloria), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. ANGLICAN 3-211. 43.
Born at St Peters, New South Wales on the 31st August 1896 to Widdop and Edith Robertshaw; husband of Annie M Robertshaw nee Kinnear (married 1916, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1959?) of Chatham Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., Charles enlisted May 1916 at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.
Charles was invalided home December 1916 with acute appendicitis, being discharged medically unfit on the 27th February 1917.
Mr. Robertshaw’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Newcastle East Public School Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 25th April 1917, 61 names originally inscribed, 83 names now inscribed, only 5 names denoted as Fallen). Name not inscribed on the Newcastle Progressive Carpenters & Joiners Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service for God, King & Country.
Did not receive Victory Medal.
