Newspaper extract:- An extract from the Queensland People, November, 1915. Bro. H Hayes, one of our Good Templar stalwarts, has been notified that his youngest son, Herbert Richard, died from wounds on August 27. The deceased enlised in November, 1911, leaving Melbourne with the 1st Reinforcement of the 15th Battalion. At the time of his death he was 23 years and two months old. Our brother joined the Evening Star Temple in 1901, passing into the Excelsior Lodge in 1913, where he took a leading part in the work of the Order. He was also a member of the Salvation Army. The latter body held a memorial service for him, which was largely attended. Sympathetic resolutions were passed to his relatives by Excelsior Lodge.
