Military Medal

'For his gallantry and leadership near METEREN on the night of the 23rd/24th April, 1918, during an attack upon the hostile position. Corporal THORLEY displayed great initiative in collecting and re-organising the men remaining in his vicinity after most of his section had been either killed or wounded by hostile machine gun and trench mortar fire. Notwithstanding the heavy casualties his party suffered this N.C.O. established a post in the line with the post on his right and within 40 yards of an enemy strong point in which several machine guns were located. The success of the operation in advancing the line in the vicinity where Corporal THORLEY established the post referred to, was in a large measure due to the courage and devotion to duty displayed by this N.C.O.'
