Son of Archibald Dale and Jemima Dale nee McKissock of 322 Ligar Street, Ballarat, Victoria.

Brother of Alfred Gregory Dale who was killed in action on 20 September 1917 while serving with the 8th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres

Commenced return to Australia on 12 May 1919 aoard HT Soudan disembarking on 26 June 1919

During 1919c Robert married Grace Elizabeth McNair in Victoria
