Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Charles was the son of Charles Thomas and Elizabeth Hull, of Buckendoon, Richmond River, New South Wales. Young Charles enlisted a few days after his father died in Buckendoon during September 1915.

He was a dairy farmer, and two of his brothers also enlisted and fought with the AIF. 2404 Private Archie Carl Hull 1st Light Horse Regiment was badly wounded by shrapnel at the Battle of Romani during August 1916 and was invalided to Australia a month later.

Another brother, 805 Private William James Hull 3rd Machine Gun Battalion was returned to Australia in July 1919.

Young Charles joined the 47th Battalion in Egypt in early 1916. He was wounded at Pozieres during their first major engagement in August 1916. He was evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to his left foot. He rejoined his unit during April 1917 and was wounded again, with shell shock, a couple of months later at Messines in Belgium. He was only out of action for a few days. He was promoted to Lance Corporal and then Sergeant in late 1917.

He was with the 47th Battalion on 28 March 1918 when they fought off a heavy German attack on their position at Dernancourt and was one of about 30 men from the Battalion killed on this day.
