Walter George Janeway was born in Mount Gambier (the date of which is unknown). Walter worked as a farmer throughout his time before enlisting in the army. His schooling is unknown, but he stayed in Mount Gambier throughout his time before the war.
Walter George Janeway enlisted on the 26th of August 1915. Walter was appointed to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; two thirds of his unit was from Brisbane the other third from Adelaide. On the 18th of November 1915 Walter embarked on the HMAT A2 Geelong which would have taken him to Port Suez in Egypt. It is confirmed that Walter fought in Egypt and Palestine under the 11th Light HorseRregiment. Although the 11th light horse regiment were trained for horseback combat there were many times where they engaged in foot battles. Walter returned to Australia on the 22nd of August 1919 after World War 1 had come to an end a year earlier.
Walter George Janeway returned back to Australia unharmed and survived to a very old age, later dying of natural causes on the 9th of March 1978 in his hometown Mount Gambier. He is buried in Carinya Gardens Cemetery, Mount Gambier, South Australia. His picture and name can be found the Mount Gambier RSL Pictorial Honour Roll which consists of the names and photos of the 480 men and women who served in World War 1 that were from Mount Gambier.
