Died on this date – 31st December…… Private Thomas John Burke was born at St. Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria in 1882. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 20th September, 1916 as a 35 year old, single, Labourer from St. Kilda, Victoria.
Private Thomas John Burke embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 20th October, 1916 with the 46th Infantry Battalion, 6th Reinforcements. He was transferred to HMAT Benalla (A 24) at Sierra Leone on 16th December, 1916.
On 22nd December, 1916 Private Burke was admitted to Ship’s Hospital with Malaria.
Private Thomas John Burke died on 31st December, 1916 at Sea on board HMAT Benalla (A 24) from Malaria.
He was buried at Sea from HMAT Benalla (A 24) on 31st December, 1916. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
