Son of Rufus Henry Underwood and Bridget Ann Underwood nee Fitzpatrick of Kimberley Street, Leederville, WA formely of Adelaide, SA

10 July 1916 - enlisted at Perth with the 51st Battalion and renk of Private.

6 April 1917 - transferred to the 32nd Battalion in France.

24 June 1918 - wounded. Wound to the left thigh. Invalided to England on 1 July 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on 15 January 1919 aboard HT City of Exeter disembarking on 25 February 1919. 

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

19 April 1919 - discharged at the 5th Military District as medically unfit due to wounding

During 1919c William married Margaret Maud Ganfield in Fremantle, WA
