Stanley Roy Owen was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1897 (1) to parents Edward and Mary Violet Owen, where his birth was registered at St Leonards. Stanley’s maternal mother, Mary Violet Owen had passed away at an early age in 1908, (2) where he came under the care of his stepmother, Hannah Sarah Owen. She was his nominated next of kin upon enlistment. He and his family lived on Kerrs Road, Lidcombe, (3) where most of his childhood was spent before his departure to the Australian Imperial Force. Stanley’s religion was the Church of England (4). Stanley attended Sydney Technical High school (5). In 1912 (6) he was in THS class 1D and in 1913 he was in THS class 2D. Graduating high school, Stanley would receive his Intermediate Certificate in 1913, where he would pursue employment and obtain his occupation as a clerk.
Stanley enlisted into the war effort on 11 July 1917 (7). During his fitness assessment (8), he was measured 5 feet and 7 inches tall and weighed 136 pounds which is approximately 62 kilograms. Stanley served as a Private in the 54th Infantry Battalion, 10th Reinforcement. He embarked 31 October 1917, leaving from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides at the age of 19. He disembarked 31 December 1917 at Devonport, England. While at sea, Stanley suffered a fractured right radius on 6 December 1917 (11),
Stanley proceeded to France in April 1918 (10). Stanley was admitted to the General Hospital, Birmingham, England on 6 September 1918 due to him being gassed on 1st September in France. After treatment he was classified as medically unfit for combat. Stanley returned to Australia on 3 January 1919 (12) and disembarked in Sydney the following month
Stanley was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force as a consequence of his medical unfitness on 23 March 1919 (13).
