Son of Thomas O'Bern and Harriet Sarah O'Bern nee Higgins of Drummond Street, North Ballarat, Victoria.
Brother of John O'Bern who was accidently killed on 13 December 1917 while serving with the Australian Army Service Corps, 1st Auxiliary Corp Troops Supply Column and is buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Plot 11, Row C, Grave 3
