Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
58 years ago today, on the 11th July 1966, Private William Leslie Slaney, referred to as Leslie and Jack, 18th Battalion (Reg No-7126), labourer and patrolman from 139 Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales and Laurieton, N.S.W. (1931) and Kew, N.S.W. (1941) and 2 Young Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W. (1966), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. ANGLICAN 3-218. 27.
Born at Stroud, New South Wales on the 19th June 1899 to William James Sr., died 24.8.1937, Moree District Hospital, N.S.W., age 82, and Ada Savina (Servina) Caroline Slaney nee Hardy, died 3.12.1931, Taree, N.S.W., age 63; husband of Jessie Elena Slaney nee Raine, married 26.11.1917, age 18 years 11 months, Hamilton, N.S.W., as Leslie William, died 27.7.1996, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 98, 30 years a widow, sleeping here, Les enlisted on the 14th September 1915 with the 30th Battalion (as SLANEY-William Leslie) Newcastle, N.S.W.
Discharged 4.3.1916 (desertion).
Reenlisted 12.9.1917, (as SLYNEY-Leslie Leonard) Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 19th December 1917.
Admitted to hospital 29.7.1918 (gastritis).
Wounded in action - 28.5.1918 (GSW right shoulder), 9.8.1918 (GSW left shoulder, severe).
Commenced return to Australia 23.7.1919.
Les arrived home on the 10th September 1919, being discharged on the 26th December 1919.
Mr. Slaney’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. The district of Broadmeadow did not produce a War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Les’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Also served WW2 as SLYNEY, Leslie, enlisted 19.12.1941, Wauchope, N.S.W., 18th Works Unit, Garrison Battalion, Service No-N102310, discharged 12.9.1945.
